La costa catanese offre solo bellezze a chi la vive: si va dalle escursioni in barca alle immersioni subacquee, passando per i musei ittici.
La zona jonica comprende anche aree salvaguardate, che sono la riserva naturale integrata “Isola Lachea e Faraglioni dei Ciclopi” – con formazioni vulcaniche legate alle prime eruzioni sottomarine, risalenti a circa 500.000 anni fa – e l’area marina protetta “Isole Ciclopi”, per la preziosità dei suoi fondali.
La riviera catanese presenta un litorale ghiaioso e ciottoloso, compreso tra Fiumefreddo e Stazzo, con un mare cristallino e trasparente che è tra i più puliti d’Italia; e poi il tratto di Santa Tecla e Santa Maria la Scala, nella “Riviera dei Limoni”, dove ci sono caratteristiche discese nere di basalto. Da Catania ad Acireale c’è la “Riviera dei Ciclopi”, la più nota, in quanto narrata nell’Odissea, nel romanzo di Giovanni Verga “I Malavoglia” e ne La Terra Trema, film di Luchino Visconti. Da qui è possibile partire per fare una gita in barca ed addentrarsi nella grotta di Ulisse.
Tra gli otto massi che formano l’arcipelago dei Ciclopi, il più grande è denominato Isola Lachea e si trova di fronte alla frazione di Aci Trezza. Su quest’isola c’è il museo ittico ed è stata costituita una riserva naturale integrale per conservare le sue rocce, i minerali, la flora e la fauna lì insediatisi, come gli uccelli piro piro, il gabbiano reale ed il falco di palude.
